Show us some fireworks.
leaa and jake joined me this year. if you listen close enough you can try and distinguish between leanne's and my smarty cat comments. more, more!
Show us some birds.
friday afternoon, i went outside for a smoke. i came back, and mr. bluebird was gone. of course i am quick to blame co-worker hans, who practically everyday puts a post-it note under my laser mouse so it won't move, tapes my phone to my receiver, switches my recylcing bin with the "mysterious poopy bin" that no one wants, or does something else that never fails to catch me off guard. so i argue with him for 30 or so minutes. "give me the bird back hans!", "i don't have your bird".
i go to smoke again and threaten "the bird better be back in it's spot when i get back, HANS!". he says whatever, i smoke. i come back, and lo and behold, a piece of yellow paper was crinkled on my desk that said "$1 or the bird dies" and a disturbing illustration of a bird hanging by a noose from a tree. i immediately stop hans from his work and force him into a handwriting sample. no, do cursive. this is cursive. you faked it!
he gives me a sample. i make him draw a bird. his bird is unfailingly the exact opposite of the bird on the ransom note. so i go around to various other co-workers and force them into handwriting samples, as well. no one's quite matches up. a while into this, i get an email. subject line: "where's my", body: "dollar". i notice the name is a co-worker friend of mine's boyfriend, and i write back "give me the bird or jenna gets it". i get an e-mail retort stating "i set the bird free. we all deserve to be free." soon after, i go out for a cigarette again, this is legitimately stressing me out by this point.
i come back to a new e-mail. "where is my ransom?". i ask my co-workers for help, i need a dollar. my boss scrounges up thirty nine cents, two chocolate m&ms, and a halls cough drop. i return the e-mail and put the offer on the table. in response, i get an e-mail with the above picture stating "time is running out".
upon closer inspection, i notice the piece of paper the "help me" sign is written on. hmm, it looks familiar. oh, it's the paper i had extras of and gave a pad to my boss! oh.. is that ribbon my bird is hanging from? wasn't it my boss's birthday last week, doesn't she still have balloons tied with RIBBON at her desk? well, i walk around the cubes and she's standing with another employee discussing work matters. i interject and say "ribbon, eh? suspicious." she gets mad and says "kayta, i'm working on the watt file, get the hell out of here, i don't have your bird, get back to work!". i lean over and in her trashcan i notice a crinkled up paper-- funny, what's that? i pick it up and unfold it, only to reveal the "help me" sign from the photographic ransom! ah hah! dig a little deeper, and i find a "draft" of the ransom note, including several different variations on the bird drawing, including a knife to a bird's throat, a bird frowning, etc. she finally breaks down and hands me the bird. i return to my desk and tape him to his normal throne and be done with it.
until this morning... when i return to my desk only to find mr. bluebird gone again. hans comes in and puts his gloves in his desk and yells "I'VE BEEN FRAMED" just as i'm writing an APB e-mail to my co-workers. mr. bluebird was finally returned, for good, to his post. super glue is coming to the office with me tomorrow, and my boss's "stress ball" is hanging from a ribbon somewhere in the bank with a "help me" sign taped to it.
everyone involved in the prank got a hand-made flyer including the photographic ransom, and an inscription across the bottom-- "for the love of birds. leave me alone."
Show us the one thing that unfailingly makes you smile, no matter what.

when i was little my mother would sing me two songs, "you are my sunshine", and "here comes the sun". there is something about the nina simone version that makes anything better.

the next day we went to target and bought two packs of ornaments and a star, and spent all night tying yarn ribbons to the top of silver and white ornaments and hooking them to the tree.
and whenever i get in a huffy mood, i come in here, plug it in and listen to ella fitzgerald sing christmas songs.
